In reading about Ephesus and their many gods, at first i was thinking - geez, can't these people get it right?? How can they trust a man made god that they made with their own hands! And then i realized that I am guilty of this on a daily basis. It's so easy to worship success or money or comfort - all things that are man made and of this earth. Is there anything man made god in your life right now?
hey kristi, i'm not really understanding this passage. it's Acts 16:7 "7When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to." i'm curious about why that happened and what the "spirit of jesus" is.
To answer Kristi's first question, when I think about it there are actually alot of man made stuff that seems to get in the way of God being in my life, sometimes it's school or sports and other times I concern myself with the future or past, even stuff like watching tv or playing games can get in the way every once and a while and I forget about God or doing something better with my time that God would approve of instead of wasting it on other "man made" things.
Kevin - great question. So after Jesus rose from the dead he met with his disciples and he told them that he was going to ascend back into heaven, but that he would send his people "the holy spirit" as a guide in the absence of his physical presence. In Acts 16:7 it is definitely vague - but i think when it says that the spirit wouldn't let them go there, it means that they felt in their hearts that they shouldn't go there by a prompting of the Holy Spirit (kind of like a conscience - going there just didn't feel right) and so they didn't go there. Does that make sense? The Holy Spirit is a deep topic, but definitely one worth reading up on and discussing more!
That makes total sense! I've had that feeling many times, and even though I want to do what I'm thinking about doing, I trust god and take his guidance. I'm not saying I do that everytime because I definitely haven't, but if we allow god to take control of our lives he can work wonders :) Maybe we could talk about the Holy Spirit at Oneway sometime?? And to answer your first question Kristi, yes there are many man-made things in my life that I worship. We need to pray and ask for help in removing these from our lives and puting our saviour Jesus Chirst first.
That would be great to talk about the Holy Spirit one time at OneWay. It's something that doesn't usually get a lot of discussion in a youth group type setting, but it's extremely important and worth talking about! Hopefully we'll get the chance to study it at some point.
OneWay is the youth group at Brookview Church in Lynnwood, Washington. The purpose of this blog is to provide an online community to keep us accountable in reading the bible on a daily basis.
The Word of God is alive and powerful (Heb 4:12). Let's examine it together and see for ourselves the truth and power that it holds!
